Canon’s new 300mm & 400mm Lenses with Real Images (PRE-PRODUCTION)

Snapshot from Canon EXPO 2010

I love sports photography and for my Formula 1 work the lens I lust after the most is the Canon 400mm f/2.8L IS USM which I used in my LensRentals.com review, right behind that is the 300mm f/2.8L IS USM. However, the thing (besides the price) that kept me from getting them and sticking with my trusty 100-400mm instead was the weight of these big lenses, but thankfully that problem has been reduced by quite a bit. In fact, with the increased IS performance I watched a pro sports shooter pull off a 1/20 sec shot that was tack sharp using the 400mm lens – handheld – something that simply wasn’t possible with the old lens. I pulled off a 1/60 sec that was very good and a 1/100 sec that was tack sharp.

This pre-production model wasn’t calibrated very well so I wouldn’t put too much stock in feedback from the EXPO on this one. The existing 300mm is so good that I’m sure this will rock once they get it fine tuned.
