EPSON P700 & P900–No More Black Ink Switching!!!!

While we all endure being locked up at home for the apocalypse, it seems hell has frozen over as Epson is FINALLY catching up with Canon to release two new SureColor printers that don’t require black ink switching!!!!

Yes, you read that right – the new SureColor P700 and P900 printers feature a new 10-channel MicroPiezo AMC printhead with dedicated channels for both Photo and Matte Black ink types so no ink switching necessary – hallelujah! This was something previously only the the 24-inch P7570 and 44-inch P9570 enjoyed, so I’m glad it has made its way down to these stalwarts.

Introducing the new Violet ink too

Both printers feature new UltraChrome PRO10 pigment ink with Violet to deliver an extremely wide color gamut, support Advanced Black and White Mode, and offer a new “Carbon Black” printing mode to dramatically increase Dmax for best-in-class black density on glossy papers. I can’t wait to try out this new Carbon Black feature!!!

For those familiar with how the P5000 offered Violet, this is better because it’s not an either or thing – you actually get both a dedicated line for matte black and violet so its the best of all worlds! I’ve heard great things about the violet ink, but I made the choice with my P5000 to go with the Standard Edition (Light Light Black) instead of the Commercial Edition (Violet) so this is wonderful news!

I’ve also noticed that LLK seems to be replaced with a renamed Gray so I suspect that is part of the formula that makes the new Carbon Black feature possible. The P900 cartridges shown above appear to be the same design and capacity, but this is a new ink set so I’d plan on having to sell your existing inks with your outgoing printer.

From that I know so far, the P700 has roll support in the same basic way that the P600 did but the P900 is just like P800 in that it requires a more substantial roll media adapter – however, I have no info yet if the P800 adapter will work on the P900 (let’s hope).

Both models appear to have a new waffle pattern for the paper trays which should result in both a weight savings and limit the surface area for dust build up (P700 shown)

Conclusion

I’m very excited about the addition of violet and the end of black ink switching. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to review one as my P800 and P5000 have been great additions to my studio. These improvements are definitely worth the upgrade. My P800 has been getting a workout in my office lately during the lockdown and P600 impressed me way more than I ever expected, so It will be fun to see how the new models perform.

NEWS: Epson SureColor P5000 replaces the 4900

Ron's Take

This past October I sat down with Epson in New York to get an early preview of the new P5000 in a room filled with amazing images that were made with this printer. My 4900 created some of the best prints I had ever seen up until recently, so I was happy to see that its replacement satisfied my extremely high quality bar.

Instead of spending a lot of time fawning over the printer body, I elected to have a deep technical discussion about the print head, inks and what I could really expect from this new printer.

Head Clogging Problem Solved?

The print quality of the Epson StylusPro 4900 was regarded to be one of the best Epson printers, but it also had a reputation as a printer whose heads clogged easily. The head clogging problem ultimately sent my 4900 to its grave after about 4 years of limited use so I've been a rather harsh critic of the 4900 because of this.

The first question on my mind during my preview of the new P5000 wasn't about print quality - it was about <censored> head problem. During this discussion I was asked not to quote specific figures, but after a lengthy discussion on the topic I felt convinced that Epson definitely understood the problem and had made significant improvements to hopefully eliminate it. Time will tell and it will be something I pay attention to when I get my review unit, but my expectations have been set that this is a problem of the past.

What's in a name?

The release of this printer marks the end of the StylusPro series of printers that many print masters knew and loved.The SureColor printers represent Epson's latest and greatest printing technology for photographers, but the number of digits is actually relevant.

Three digit devices like the P600 and P800 that I tested and loved are geared for desktop users. Most of  my readers fall into this camp and won't need a professional production class printer denoted by four digits as is the case with the P5000, P7000 and P9000 HDX ink based printers.

In the previous generation 3880 users who wanted roll support had to move up to the 4900 or greater, but Epson addressed this problem by offering roll support (albeit without a built-in cutter) with the P800. This is relevant because the P5000, just like its predecessor the 4900, is still a huge and heavy printer (albeit about 30 pounds lighter) that is designed for higher volume use. This means it won't go on your desktop and it's going to work best when used frequently versus the occasional print here and there. 

New Ink Set

The new ink set is supposed to offer improved blacks that yeild a higher DMax, bronzing has been reduced, and with the new violet ink you can accurately reproduce 99% of Pantone colors.

Q&A

Here’s a few questions I had about this printer that Epson provided for me:

• Is WiFi supported? No, an Ethernet network cable or USB 2.0 is still required which Epson claims was done for performance/reliability reasons.  
• Is the annoying printable area issue improved to be more user friendly? Epson claims the Maximize feature I mention in my article has been made more discoverable, but I haven’t seen this UI change yet.
• Is it any faster? No, it performs about like the 4900. 8" x 10" prints from 0:59 to 2:26  (normal is 1:28) and 11" x 14" prints from 1:42 to 4:04 (normal is 2:31)
• Are letter size borderless prints possible? No, here’s the response I got from Epson:

When printing sheet media, the SureColor P5000 requires 3mm margins on all sides. The SureColor P5000’s setting are programed to print borderless on very common, specific photo sizes, including 8x10. However, [it] cannot print 8.5x11 borderless. With roll media, the SureColor P5000 can support borderless widths of 8”, 10”, 11”, 13”, 14”, 16”, 16.5”, and 17” print. Like the Stylus Pro 4900, the  SureColor P5000 does not support Borderless on Sheet media (SC-P800 best choice if that is the primary need), you can make  borderless 8" x 10 " prints by using a 10" wide roll of media and selecting one of the borderless trim modes for the cutter.

The SureColor P5000 offers versatile media handling capabilities with auto-switching between the high-capacity front paper cassette and roll media feeder. Conclusion

This is a significant announcement as the 3880 is an excellent printing machine, but it had become a technology dinosaur compared to other manufacturer printers which supported wireless printing. However, the cool features mean nothing if you don’t have an improvement in prints, and I felt that was present in the prints I observed at WPPI.

If you are wondering how it compares to a P600, you aren’t alone. I asked Epson this question and was told that the P800 is identical to the P600 in every way except for the improved advanced media handling, better roll support and other minor improvements. Rejoyce about this as it means it is likely to be free of head clogging issues that have plagued the 4900 (assuming you print at least one age per month).

The size of this printer is similar to the 3880 so it makes a great replacement for users who have one of those printers already.

Sony Electronics Introduces the Speedy New α77 II Interchangeable Lens Camera with Record-breaking 79-Point Autofocus System

SAN DIEGO, May 1, 2014 – Sony Electronics’ new α77 II camera delivers an impressive combination of speed, versatility and efficiency in a tough, weather-resistant design, making it a perfect choice for fast-action photography and videography.

Building on the heritage of Sony’s much-loved original α77 and α700 cameras, the α77 II gives advanced amateurs a string of exciting enhancements including the world’s highest number of AF points in a new phase detect autofocus system¹ with 79 focal points and 15 cross points. Utilizing Sony’s unique Translucent Mirror Technology, the α77 II also has the ability to shoot at up to 12 fps for 60 total frames with continuous AF.

The speedy new camera is equipped with a high-resolution 24.3 MP image sensor and powerful BIONZ^® X processor, ensuring that still images and full HD videos are captured in sharp focus and incredible detail. Image quality compared to the original α77 has been boosted, and sensitivity has increased by approximately 20% as well. There is also a variety of new pro-friendly video functions for movie makers.

“The new A77 II is yet another strong statement for Sony in the interchangeable lens camera space” said Neal Manowitz, director of the α interchangeable lens camera division at Sony. “In addition to this camera’s impressive imaging credentials and unprecedented focusing system, it reinforces our dedication to the A-mount camera lineup and shows that we are pushing the limits of innovation in all aspects of the industry.”

New-generation 79 point phase detection AF system

The advanced AF system on the new α77 II camera features 79 phase detection AF points – the most of any dedicated AF sensor in market today – and includes 15 cross points within the central area of the sensor. Additionally, metering data from all 79 focus points is processed by a brand new AF algorithm that predicts the subject’s movement. These impressive new features combined with Sony’s powerful Translucent Mirror Technology ensure that fast-moving people, animals or any other relevant object can be tracked quickly and accurately in all types of shooting conditions.

The α77 II camera also has a centrally mounted dedicated phase detect AF sensor that supports apertures up to F2.8, ensuring maximum AF precision when using large-aperture lenses. In low light, the AF system of the camera performs admirably, accurately locking on to subjects in scenes with illumination levels as low as EV-2 (ISO100), where even the human eye has trouble discerning details.

There’s a suite of sophisticated new AF functions on the α77 II model that make the most of the unique 79-point system. Expanded Flexible Spot mode maintains focus even if the selected AF point loses track of the subject, activating eight surrounding AF points that recognize the subject. Lock-on AF mode lets users select one of four AF area modes (Wide, Zone, Flexible Spot or Expanded Flexible Spot), and can recognize and track a subject’s form based on its color and its position within the frame, automatically selecting the appropriate AF point from the 79 available

For even greater control, the degree of subject-tracking duration can be fine-tuned in five steps (when shooting still images in AF-C mode). A low setting is ideal for slow-moving subjects with predictable movements, while high settings deliver more responsive focusing for shooting different subjects at different distances, such as wildlife or sports photography. AF Tracking Duration can also be selected between High, Medium and Low during Full HD movie shooting.

Other new features include an Eye AF function that precisely detects and focuses on the subject’s eyes when photographing people. There is also AF Range Control, which allows AF to be limited to a specified range, and a Balanced Emphasis mode that provides the ideal balance between focus and release timing. Users can manually select any of the various focus modes to match the shooting situation and their creative objectives.

Shoot a continuous burst of 60 full-resolution frames at up to 12 fps

Continuous shooting stamina on the α77 II camera outpaces nearly all cameras in its class as well as many professional cameras. The new model can capture a non-stop burst of up to 60 full-resolution JPEG images at a maximum continuous shooting speed of approximately 12 frames per second with continuous AF (in Continuous Advance Priority AE mode).

24.3 megapixel Exmor^® CMOS image sensor with enhanced sensitivity

A showcase of Sony’s leading image sensor technologies, the new 24.3 megapixel Exmor^® CMOS image sensor in the α77 II camera features the same gapless on-chip lens structure as used in the acclaimed α7R and α6000 models. Thanks to an array of latest-generation imaging innovations, the sensor now offers 20% greater sensitivity than its predecessor (α77), and ensures flawless image detail and low-noises performance across the wide sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 25600.

The high-resolution sensor is partnered by the same evolved BIONZ X image processor introduced in the α7 and α7R models. Around three times faster than Sony’s previous BIONZ engine and optimized for the α77 II camera, it employs detail reproduction, diffraction-reducing and area-specific noise reduction technologies that contribute to amazing image definition and rich colors for still images and Full HD videos.

OLED Tru-Finder™ and 3-way tilting LCD

OLED Tru-Finder with 2,360,000 dot resolution

The new camera features a crisp, bright XGA OLED Tru-Finder with 2,360,000 dot resolution. With about three times higher contrast and resolving power compared to the original α77, the EVF on the new α77 II shows the effects of all settings adjustments in real-time, accurately displaying what the final image will look like. A wide viewing angle and high eye-point are complemented by a newly-expanded choice of brightness settings, and shooters have the ability to manually adjust color temperature for comfortable, accurate composition.

As featured on the full-frame α99 camera, the α77 II model also features a detail-packed 3.0-type (7.5 cm) Xtra Fine LCD that moves three ways for added convenience. The LCD also features WhiteMagic™ technology, which significantly improves screen visibility, even outdoors in direct sunlight.

Expanded Control and Customization

Evolved from the original α77 model, there are separate control dials on both sides of the grip for simpler control settings adjustments. In total, the α77 II camera has a total of 11 customizable buttons with up to 51 assignable functions.

Further, up to three frequently used groups of shooting modes and other settings can be stored in memory and recalled easily via the mode dial, and an exposure mode dial lock function has been inherited from the a99 model to prevent accidental mode changes.

Tough enough for serious enthusiasts

The tough, light magnesium body of the α77 II camera is engineered to withstand the demands of the most serious enthusiasts. It features a dust and moisture sealed design and a large, contoured grip for comfortable handling. In addition, the camera’s durable shutter unit is rated for 150,000 total shots.

Pro-style movie shooting with continuous AF

The α77 II camera can record Full HD 60p and 24p movies using the AVCHD 2.0 format. As with still shooting, Translucent Mirror Technology enables full-time phase-detection AF, ensuring accurate focus tracking with fast-moving subjects during video capture.

The camera has a number of additional features for serious movie makers, including three-level AF tracking sensitivity adjustment, a pro-style Zebra function and audio level metering. There’s also the addition of a clean HDMI^® output that allows viewing on an external monitor and recording to an external storage device without compression

Wi-Fi^® and PlayMemories™ Connectivity

On-board Wi-Fi allows one-touch connection for easy shot sharing with your Xperia^®, NFC-compatible Android™ smartphones, tablets and VAIO^® computers. A single touch also activates Smart Remote Control, linking the camera to your mobile phone enabling you to fire the shutter from a distance.

For devices without NFC one-touch capabilities, users can wirelessly transfer images and videos and activate Smart Remote Control through Sony’s free PlayMemories Mobile™ application, available for the iOS and Android platforms.

Covering focal lengths from wide angle to telephoto, a family of 32 A-mount lenses offers an extensive choice of creative tools for visual expression, including several premium models from Carl Zeiss® and G Series Lenses.

The new α77 II camera is compatible with a range of versatile α accessories including microphones, flashes and more, and is designed to work the optional VG-C77AM grip, which enhances camera operability and versatility during vertical shooting.

Sony has also released a new photography-themed “α Library” application for tablets. This new app showcases the entire lineup of α lenses, including key information and specifications, in the “α Lens Catalog” section, and also includes access to a semiannual “α Magazine” lifestyle publication that showcases fun photography stories, tips, techniques and more. The new α Library is now available for download on Google Play and the iOS App Store.

Pricing and Availability

The Sony α77 II interchangeable lens camera will be available in June 2014 in a kit with a 16-50mm F2.8 lens (model SAL1650) for a suggested retail price of $1800. It will also be offered separately as a body for a suggested retail price of $1200.

Nikon D4s–The Canon 1D X Killer?

Featuring the latest EXPEED 4 image processor, the new D4s is 30% faster than its predecessor and takes the top spot in Nikon’s professional DSLR lineup. Working with an updated full-frame 16.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, it can shoot with a native ISO up to 25,600, or up to 409,600 with ISO expansion, resulting in crisp, clean imagery in low light conditions as well as improved overall quality and a variety of feature updates, including full HD video at 60 fps.

Shoot 200 full-size JPEGs at 11 fps, and offload them via a speedy 1000BASE-T Ethernet port. The new RAW SIZE S file type provides a new smaller RAW option for streamlining the workflow while maintaining excellent post-production editing possibilities.

Fast autofocus is possible with Group Area AF, which uses 5 sensors for optimized focusing within an area. Additionally, time lapse and interval shooting has been revamped with the ability to record up to 9,999 shots as well as use exposure smoothing to eliminate flicker from your final product — you can even set it for up to one week later. The D4s has also received a new EN-EL18a lithium-ion battery for up to 3,020 shots on a single charge.

Video shooting can implement Auto ISO Control during manual exposure as well as simultaneous recording to both the memory card and an external recorder, while also maintaining live view. And, FX, DX, and 2.7x crop modes can be chosen while in live view. Audio can sound even better with a selectable frequency range between wide and voice, and the new ability to change settings while recording.

Conclusion

I reviewed the Nikon D4 and while it was a nice camera, it didn’t impress me much. As a Canon 1D X owner, I see this camera as the first real threat to my camera. I’m very happy to see that Nikon stuck with the 16.2MP and focused on the things that matter like a huge buffer to hold its 11fps machine gun mode, and proper video support. The improved high ISO performance is huge for sports photographers too, so I’m sure this is going to be a great upgrade for existing D3s & D4 owners. This version also finally catches up to Canon on AF point groups, and offers a battery that promises to blow Canon’s away.

I’m eager to try this one out to see how it compares to my 1D X to see if this might tempt me to switch!

OLED viewfinder perfection

Fujifilm X-T1 - Rear View

The FUJIFILM X-T1 combines a unique wide-angle 2.36m dot resolution OLED view with the world’s highest magnification (0.77x) for a digital camera ^*2 and shortest display lag-time of just 0.005sec^*3 to react as quickly as you need in any environment. 

The OLED viewfinder also includes cutting-edge technology to bring users even closer to their subjects. The X-T1’s viewfinder uses a newly designed Graphic User Interface that provides an exciting shooting experience with clear details and a comfortable at-a-glance view of your settings.

The X-T1 has four OLED EVF Display Modes:

1. "FULL" mode takes full advantage of the high magnification ratio of the X-T1's viewfinder to give an unrivalled view of the scene
2. "NORMAL" provides an optimum view, including shooting settings
3. "DUAL" is specially designed for manual focusing with a clever split view. The regular view and manual focus area can be simultaneously checked (with Digital Split Image^TM or Focus Peak Highlight)^*4
4. “PORTRAIT” view in “NORMAL" and “FULL” modes automatically rotates the displayed information when the camera is held vertically

Award-winning 16.3 Megapixel APS-C X-Trans CMOS II sensor and EXR Processor II

The FUJIFILM X-T1 uses the award-wining EXR Processor II and X-Trans^™ CMOS II sensor with built in phase detection that delivers an astonishing response time of just 0.08 seconds and a super-fast 0.5 second start-up time^*5, along with a 0.05 second shutter time lag and a 0.5 second shooting interval^*6.

The X-T1 can also shoot up to 8 frames per second^*7 with tracking AF and is the first-ever CSC^*8 to be compatible with SDXC UHS-II format memory cards for data writing speed (in Continuous Mode) that is approximately twice that of a conventional SD card.

Tough, weather-resistant design  

Fujifilm X-T1 - Overhead View

The FUJIFILM X-T1 is the first weather-resistant X-Series CSC (when used with a weather-resistant lens) that performs in a wide range of challenging environments. The X-T1 uses more than 75 points of weather sealing, and the camera body is dust-resistant and water-resistant. The X-T1 is also freeze proof to -14°F for full-fledged field photography work, while the premium clear 3” LCD screen with 1.04 million dot resolution is made of tempered glass for additional outdoor protection.

Traditional handling, modern response

Fujifilm X-T1 - Tilt LCD View

With five mechanical dials on the top-plate, two command dials; one on the front and one on the rear, and six fully customizable function buttons, the FUJIFILM X-T1 feels and functions like a proper photographic tool in the hand. The top-plate includes two machined-aluminum double-deck dials for the shutter speed and metering, and the ISO sensitivity and drive modes, and each is designed to turn with a reassuring click, while their textured surfaces gives a firm confirmation when setting up a shot.

With their exposure values clearly marked, the X-T1’s settings can be checked at a glance without using the rear LCD and the dials are perfectly arranged so that functions can be changed without removing your eye from the viewfinder. The six customizable function buttons and two command-dials arranged on the front and rear complete the picture, ensuring instant setting satisfaction.

WiFi and remote camera operation

The X-T1 one-touch WiFi connectivity lets you easily share images to your smartphone or tablet – pictures that these devices cannot capture - and remote shooting via smartphone or tablet using the Fujifilm Camera Remote app for unique capture opportunities.

Additional grip and weather resistant lenses

The optional vertical battery grip (VG-XT1) has the same hardy structure as the X-T1, so when added to the body, it is completely secured against the elements.

Fujifilm is launching three weather-resistant zoom lenses to complement the X-T1 camera in 2014, including the XF18-135mmF3.5-5.6 R OIS WR, XF16-55mmF2.8 R OIS WR and the XF50-140mmF2.8 R OIS WR.

Conclusion

While I would have loved to have seen a full-frame version come out in response to the a7/a7R, this is really quite an impressive camera that I can not wait to review. I thought I’d end up getting the X-E2 based on what I saw from the press release, but alas the unit that arrived didn’t captivate me so much that I felt like I had to have it. I think this one may be different, so I can’t wait to get my hands on it and find out.
